Lasik eye surgery is the most common and most preferred form of laser refractive surgery and used to correct any kind of vision problem. This has always been an alternative to glasses or contact lenses.

What happens during surgery?

During the surgery a special type of cutting laser is used to change the shape of the cornea. This is done to improve your vision. In eyes with normal vision, the cornea refracts light into the retina in a very precise way. We have nearsightedness however, farsightedness or astigmatism, light is refracted improperly and incorrectly which then results in blurred vision.

How long is surgery?

Surgery lasts 30 to 45 minutes.

What must I do during recovery?

Right after surgery, your eyes might itch and burn, you might be teary and you will likely have blurred vision. Pain is very minimal and recovery is quick. You will be given pain medication and eyedrops to keep comfortable and your eye doctor will also provide a shield if necessary to help you protect your eyes from contact. Your vision won't be clear during the first few days and your vision will stabilise after a few months.

You mustn't use make up and cosmetics around your eyes and wait multiple weeks before resuming hard exercise, swimming and unnecessary water contact to your eyes.

Do I need Lasik Eye Surgery?

Glasses or contact lenses may not always correct your vision, but the reshaping of the cornea through lasik eye surgery will provide a solution. Those with nearsightedness and farsightedness will most definitely benefit from surgery. Those with astigmatism, which is an issue where the cornea curves or flattens and evenly, disrupting both new and distant vision will also benefit from the same procedure

Are there any risks?

Complications to do with Lasik I surgery are very rare. One very rare problem is loss of vision. Temporary side-effects include dry eyes and visual problems such as blurred vision. These clear up in a short amount of time, from a few days to a few weeks.

Who cannot undergo surgery?

If you have an eye disease that causes your cornea to thin or bulge, or have a family history of similar problems, then you are not eligible for surgery. Also, if you have fairly good overall vision, large pupils of thin corners, participate in sports which can lead to physical injury to your face, have age-related eye problems and severe nearsightedness, then you are not eligible for surgery.

How can I prepare?

Where only a few things you must do to prepare for surgery. The first is to consult your own doctor to discuss if you're eligible. Aside from that it is best to avoid using any kind of make up, solutions or perfume is on the face during the day of the surgery and the day before.
